曼谷的發條女孩 by Paolo Bacigalupi5/21/2023 ![]() ![]() Its setting is the American Southwest, at a time in the near future when Britney Spears is toothless and old, the country is plagued by climactic calamities and the Southwest's dwindling water supply is controlled by robber barons.Ī toothless Britney Spears, believe it or not, is the least chilling thing about The Water Knife - although "chilling" might be the wrong word for Bacigalupi's speculative vision of Arizona. But where The Windup Girl takes place hundreds of years from now in Southeast Asia, The Water Knife hits closer to home for U.S. In his equally powerful sophomore novel, The Water Knife, he takes a similar approach to an inorganic substance without which human life wouldn't exist: H2O. In The Windup Girl, Paolo Bacigalupi's best-selling, Hugo- and Nebula-winning debut, the author imagines a 23rd century in which the forces of commerce have run amok over the basic, biological building blocks of life. It's where no one but this particular author would know how to describe this person or that circumstance, this pain or that crime, the unique inside the generic. Now this is a thing you can't buy with money. They're that too, just like This Old Heart of Mine is a great dance number, but there's this thing called an authentic voice, or whatever the term is. ![]() ![]() As when you're listening to some old piece of music you never thought much of, it could be a long ago seemingly throwaway pop dance number like This Old Heart of Mine by the Isley Brothers, or some slyer more college-degreed album track like (let's say) Life During Wartime by Talking Heads, and you suddenly jump up and think but - but really, this is a masterpiece! - it's not just another painting-by-numbers from Motown, it's not just another sneery too-clever construction you skip while you're trying to find Once in a Lifetime, Juno Diaz' tales from the front line of squalour and immigration aren't just another vicarious thrillseeking tour of Poverty-and-Ignorance Hell, not just another wound-baring stigmata-showing howl from yet more people from yet another abyss you wish you didn't know about. ![]()

The light between oceans book review5/21/2023 ![]() ![]() (See Being Selective – How do you choose which books to read?) It’s free, it can’t be manipulated and there’s always something behind it. ![]() ![]() That’s just me multiply that by all the people who already love it two weeks after publication and you have PR gold dust nothing works like word of mouth. I’ve just told a group of friends about this book, one of at least ten conversations since I finished it last week. As I mentioned in a recent post Book Titles – (Don’t) Call It What You Like, I wanted to read The Light Between Oceans from the moment I heard the title: it is original, it conveys the theme and gives a real taste of the beauty and emotion of the story inside the (equally beautiful) cover. Sometimes you just get a feeling about a book. ![]() |
